Energy Applications for Precious Metal Products
01
Electrolysis
Electrolysis of water is used to separate hydrogen and oxygen. This process is useful both for hydrogen generation as a fuel and for oxygen generation. Precious metals are widely used in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers where catalytic activity in highly corrosive settings is necessary.
- Platinum targets are used to form Pt layers that act as catalysts for proton reduction to generate hydrogen (H2). Pt is known as a hydrogen evolution catalyst.
- Gold layers can be deposited on titanium as an oxidation protective layer to form corrosion resistant and very conductive current collectors.
02
Compact Fusion Energy Reactors
Emerging technology around compact fusion energy reactors is enabled by high temperature superconducting wire.
- RSC produces both rotatable and planar silver targets designed for sputter coating silver on high temperature superconducting wire.
