The Role of Precious Metals in Advanced Medical Applications
Custom solutions for the medical industry
Precious metals have unique qualities useful for the medical industry. Silver targets are commonly used to deposit antimicrobial coatings. Other precious metals such as gold, platinum, and palladium often find uses for their electrical and chemical stability in medical devices and sensors. One example is glucose monitoring strips for diabetes control and management.

Types of Applications
01
Exceptionally Unique Qualities
Gold, platinum, and palladium targets are commonly used to sputter very thin films of these layers for manufacturing glucose test strips. These precious metals are conductive, biocompatible, and corrosion resistant metals used to form the electrodes in the glucose test strips that operate by electrochemical reaction. The test strips are used to measure blood glucose levels for diabetes management.
02
Antibacterial Properties
Silver is well known for its antibacterial properties. Positively charged silver ions damage cellular function. RSC’s sputtering targets are used for producing wound dressings.
03
Wide Range of Medical Applications
RSC makes silver and gold wire and strips for a variety of medical applications.
